About the Doctors



Dr. Mithran S. Goonewardene

Dr. Mithran Goonewardene completed his Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours from the University of Western Australia and undertook his specialist training at the Forsyth Dental Center in Boston, USA, obtaining a Certificate in Orthodontics from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine/Forsyth Dental Center and a Master of Medical Science degree from the Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Goonewardene has combined part-time practice in Subiaco and Booragoon with a significant teaching role at the University of Western Australia leading the  Orthodontics Department for 30 years. He has published numerous scientific papers in the peer reviewed literature and contributed to four textbooks in orthodontics. He delivers numerous lectures and courses locally, nationally and internationally and plays an active role in education and delivery of orthodontic and surgical services in Sri Lanka, where he visits regularly.

Dr. Goonewardene is an active member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Sri Lankan Orthodontic Society and the Australian Dental Association. He is a full member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. Dr. Goonewardene is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Society and a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International.

Dr. Goonewardene was recently awarded the highest honour from the Australian Society of Orthodontists of Honorary Life Membership for his contribution to orthodontic education in Australia and Internationally.

Dr. Goonewardene and his wife Tania are proud parents of baby Jasmine and he has six adult children. Roy the oldest joined the practice as an orthodontist in 2015 after training in the US. Christine is a physiotherapist who works in private practice and for the West Coast Eagles. Georgia and Katherine work and live in London. Andrew is studying at UWA and Elizabeth is a chef in Perth.





Dr. Andrew Kalafatas

Andrew was born and raised in Perth and graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Dental Science degree in 1987 and was awarded the prize of top student in his year and also the best clinician in his year. He completed his Post Graduate studies achieving a Master of Dental Science degree in Orthodontics more than 20 years ago and has worked in private practice since that time.

Andrew is a founding fellow of the Western Australian Dental Foundation and has had an appointment at the University of Western Australia as a clinical tutor since graduation. He is a specialist member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists and has been a member of the Executive committee on several occasions and is also a member of the Australian Dental Association. He regularly attends local, national and international orthodontic conferences to keep abreast of the latest techniques and procedures so that they can be implemented into our practice to assure the best possible care for our patients.

Away from orthodontics, Andrew is the proud father of three boys, including twins, which keep both he and his wife extremely busy. He is an avid sports fan and keen member of the West Coast Eagles.

Andrew’s training, vast experience and pursuit for excellence allows him to gain the best results for his patients.



Dr. Mike Razza

After completing his undergraduate studies at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, USA, Associate Professor, Mike Razza earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Baylor College of Dentistry, Dallas, Texas, USA. Dr Razza later went on to receive his Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry, USA and has been teaching at the University of Western Australia in the profession for 26 years to both Orthodontic and Graduate students. Dr Razza has been in the private practice for over 20 years.

Associate Professor Razza is an active member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) where he has served as President of the Australian Society of Orthodontists Western Australian Branch and Federal President of the Australian Society of Orthodontists.  Dr Razza is also an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Asian Pacific Society of Orthodontists, the North Atlantic Component of the Angle Society of Orthodontists and the Australian Dental Association. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and a member of Delta Sigma Delta. He is also a frequent lecturer in his profession within Australia and overseas.

Dr Razza received one of the highest honours of the profession within Australia, the Australian Society of Orthodontist, Distinguished Service Award in 2015.

Mike and his wife, Jacqueline, have four daughters, Rachel, Ruth, Laura and Victoria. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.





Dr. John Stamatis

Dr. John Stamatis is a graduate of the University of Western Australia where he obtained his BDSc and MDSc degrees. He has 10 years of experience in general dentistry and over 25 years in orthodontics.

Dr. Stamatis often lectures to staff and dental assistants, as well as to students at the Dental School of the University of Western Australia.

Dr. Stamatis keeps in touch with the latest advances in his field. He has spent several terms as the executive of the “Australian Society of Orthodontists” and is the immediate past president.

Dr. Stamatis and his wife have three children, who keep him very active out of office hours. Dr. Stamatis is an active member of the Hellenic Community of W.A. In his remaining free time, he enjoys cooking, gardening and spending time with his dog, Daisy.





Dr. Robert Hamilton

Dr. Hamilton has completed his Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours, the Bachelor of Science in Dentistry with Honours and the Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics at The University of Western Australia. Dr. Hamilton was successful in the Fellowship of the RACDS and has successfully completed the examinations for the MRACDS(Ortho) and the MorthRCDS(Edin) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

Robert is well qualified and has lectured on several topics at national level. He has completed research evaluating the efficiency of various contemporary orthodontic appliances, as well as the stability following combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment. Dr. Hamilton’s research has been published and presented at several international orthodontic meetings.

Robert is committed and dedicated to his work and would welcome orthodontic referrals for children and adults assuring the patients would receive the best orthodontic management and have a pleasant and professional experience. He practices the most advanced clinical treatment techniques available providing such treatments as Invisalign, Lingual braces, Self-ligating braces and combined complex surgical orthodontic cases.  In his spare time Dr Hamilton enjoys surfing, watersports, fishing and spending time with family and friends.



Dr. Roy Goonewardene

Dr Roy Goonewardene completed his Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of Western Australia. Whilst working as a practicing dentist he completed a Bachelor of Science in Dentistry with Honours. He undertook his specialist orthodontic training in the United States at one of the pre-eminent orthodontic departments at the University of Connecticut under Professor Ravindra Nanda and Professor Charles Burstone,  obtaining a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Dental Science degree. Prior to his time in the USA, he completed a short term postgraduate orthodontic residency in Aarhus, Denmark at the Aarhus University.

Dr Goonewardene is an active member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists and the Australian Dental Association. He has completed research involving new techniques in the field as well as evaluating the stability of orthognathic procedures with special interest in the area of orthodontics and surgery.  In his downtime, he enjoys playing tennis, watching the West Coast Eagles/Boston Celtics, live music and spending time with his family and friends.
